Abdul Ahad Momand was born on January 1, 1959, in Afghanistan. He became the first Afghan in space in 1988, flying on Soyuz TM-6 to the Mir space station. He spent nearly 9 days in space, conducting experiments and famously reciting the Quran in orbit. His mission was a symbol of Soviet-Afghan cooperation during a complex political time.
