Arnaldo Tamayo Méndez was born on January 29, 1942, in Guantánamo, Cuba. In 1980, he became the first person of African descent and the first Cuban to travel to space, flying on Soyuz 38 as part of the Interkosmos program. He spent nearly 8 days aboard Salyut 6, participating in medical and biological experiments. Méndez was awarded the titles Hero of the Soviet Union and Hero of the Republic of Cuba.
