Phạm Tuân was born on February 14, 1947, in Quôc Tuân, Vietnam. In 1980, he became the first Vietnamese in space and the first Asian cosmonaut, flying on Soyuz 37 as part of the Soviet Interkosmos program. He spent nearly 8 days on Salyut 6, conducting experiments and symbolically strengthening Vietnam–Soviet relations. Tuân was a decorated military pilot before joining the space program and after his mission he rose to senior ranks in the Vietnamese Air Force.
