Valery Bykovsky was a Soviet cosmonaut. Trained as a military pilot, he was selected for the first Soviet cosmonaut group in 1960. He flew into space three times: on Vostok 5 (1963), Soyuz 22 (1976), and Soyuz 31 (1978). During his first mission, he set a space endurance record at the time with almost five days in orbit. In total, he spent more than 20 days in space and played a significant role in the early Soviet space program. On his last flight, Soyuz 31, he was the commander who took Sigmund Jähn, the first German, into space.
