Valery Kubasov was a Soviet engineer and cosmonaut. He flew on three space missions: Soyuz 6 (1969), the Apollo–Soyuz Test Project (1975), and Soyuz 35/36 (1980). He was one of the first to perform welding experiments in space and played a critical role in the first joint U.S.–Soviet mission. Kubasov was awarded the title "Hero of the Soviet Union" twice. He passed away in 2014.
