Vladimir Shatalov flew three early Soyuz missions: Soyuz 4, Soyuz 8, and Soyuz 10, becoming one of the first cosmonauts to dock two crewed spacecraft in orbit. In total, he spent 9 days in space and contributed to milestones in the Soviet history of orbital rendezvous and docking techniques. After retiring from flight, he became general Kamanins successor and led the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center for many years. Over the course of the following years, Shatalov was twice named Hero of the Soviet Union. He passed away in 2021.
