Valery Polyakov was physician and cosmonaut. He holds the record for the longest single spaceflight, spending 437 consecutive days aboard Mir from 1994 to 1995. Over his career, he logged more than 679 days in space, focusing on the medical effects of long-duration missions. Part of his work laid the foundation for future Mars mission planning. Polyakov was named Hero of the Soviet Union and Hero of the Russian Federation. He passed away in 2022 and is remembered for his pioneering role in space medicine.
